So, close to the end the English guy shows Charlotte a letter, that i read was written by Jewell confessing to the murder. Is that right?
I don't recall him getting the letter. How did he get the letter, etc., etc?
Nevermind, I just saw the scene again where Jewel gives him the letter and says don't open it while i am still alive.

Why didn't Charlotte show the letter to the police immediately? She is letting them take her to the loony bin instead of showing the letter to defend herself!
Just as Willis, the Lloyds of London guy, states "you're my favorite living mystery" Charlotte's fame is now directly connected to the whispers of her being homicidal. If she cleared it up, "then you wouldn't be a mystery anymore, would you?"
So her infamy has become her legacy, perhaps the biggest tragic fact of the entire story.
Plus, y'know, she'd just killed two more people for real.

There is no indication she is going to a mental hospital/institution. She is more likely going to the police station to give a statement and an interview. At such time, she would give them the letter. Also, I would think that from the friendly reactions of the townspeople towards Charlotte, some of the truth of what happened had already circulated among them. And who knows, maybe some of them even suspected things of the cousin and doctor.

By the way, there are literally dozens of discussions on this IMDB forum and elsewhere about "Where did the English guy get the letter from?" For some reason, so many people miss the same thing that you missed. I never understand why, except it keeps happening. Very strange !!
I think it's because people think the scene with Jewel and Willis is relatively unimportant and they go make a sandwich or bathroom run while it's on. I saw this in a theatre when it first came out and nobody questioned it.
shareWhy didn't Charlotte give the note to the police? Because she didn't need to- she wasn't charged with murder, so she wasn't being taken to an asylum or jail. And if she had been, you can bet she would have turned that letter over asap.
I love how everyone thinks she was going to the asylum at the end. That scene with the letter should make people realize she's merely leaving the house because it's being torn down.

..right before Miriam and the Doctor get smashed (yes, killed by Charlotte) they were going to have a HOME visit by the psychiatrists, and have the Doctor walk out and push Charlotte over the edge of sanity.
The police were there to remove her from the property, as the eviction notice has been served and the time was up. She had to move anyway--see the 'present scenes' where she's shooting at the wrecking crew and the sheriff intervenes, tells her she HAS to go within a certain time.
My point is, she killed two people...you just don't walk away from that. And even if she did tell them the story, her history is that she mentally ill, she surely would have been taken for psychiatric evaluation to determine the validity of her story.
