Region 1 DVD???

When is this ever going to be available on DVD in Region 1? Also, is it available in widescreen (or was it ever widescreen to begin with)?

I completely agree. I saw this movie as a child in the mid sixties, and I can still vividly remember scenes: there was some tropical, drippy cave, and some sort of indigenous figurine. I remember laughing, and laughing, even though I was only five or six. I can not believe this movie is not as famous as any of the Bond movies, or Our Man Flint. This movie *really* needs to be reissued to excite several new generations of enthusiasts.

I saw this baby for the first time in 1965 in Budapest, Hungary. The theater was jam-packed. I went back to see it again, and it was jam-packed then, too.

Ever since that time, it has been shown on Hungarian television every once in a while. The 35mm print they use over there has not been digitally restored, of course.

It was filmed in "European wide screen" in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio by the irreplaceable Phillipe de Broca.

Your best bet is to order a DVD of it from France (Region 2). Amazon has them also, all you need to make sure is you have a Region 2 or Regionless player that can also output PAL.

This is a Russian issued regionless DVD in NTSC, Full Screen, subtitled in English, which is how you ant it. The English dub that they used to show here on TV was not at all good. It ships from NJ or NY, so there should be no problem with it.

Regionless means it will play in Region 1, 2, etc. As all DVDs should, really.

Note that the film was "widescreen" originally, in the then prevalent in Europe 1.66:1 AR. The full-screen version here gives you 1.33:1 AR (i.e. 4:3 Academy).

This seems to be the same exact Russian "DVD Maghic" release of "That Man From Rio" as in the one above, except that it states the film is coded in PAL. Not much of a dfference, anyhow, as most players are NTSC/PAL capable. And since it is regionless, you can play it in any DVD player or PC.

Another great J.P. Belmondo film is the 1972 film "The Burglers," in which he co-starred with Omar Shariff. That was filmed in Greece.

You can buy the Russian DVD from an eBay vendor. It's top quality and has English subtitles. I had given up on waiting for an official US release.
