the crowd at the tv show

they certainly looked like they were in the throes of true beatlemania, didn't they?

any idea how "staged" they were or whether the boys played a few numbers and these were genuine reactions?

They were genuine reactions. That is what Beatlemania really looked like. Richard Lester put ads in the papers inviting fans to come to the theater and the kids got to watch the production for free.

Not only that, the shooting lasted several hours, compared to the standard 20-minute Beatle concert of the time.

reply

Worth noting, in considering how much fun it might have been to be in the crowd: the Beatles didn't actually play, they just lip-synced.

reply

I don't think that mattered much. They could've been playing checkers and still gotten the same excited reaction from the fans.

Supposedly,

STING is one of the kids in the crowd

You're thinking of Phil Collins, who went on to narrate "You Can't Do That, the Making of 'A Hard Day's Night'", worth seeking out.

reply

Ah ha

Phill Collins makes more sense!

However- IF Sting were 13 at the time, it would make perfect sense for him to be there

reply

Actually, he was 12, and his family lived hundreds of miles away from London.

I read an article recently by someone who was there. He said the concert shooting session took several hours, and that the hall slowly filled with the smell of urine as the fans couldn't 'contain' themselves.

According to Collins, he was 12 when he did the movie. So, a 13-year-old Sting wouldn't have been out of the question.

I should think a 13-year-old sting would've healed by NOW.

reply

Collins has either mis-stated his birthdate or is misremembering his age. His bio says he was born in January 1951; the concert scene in AHD'sN was filmed on March 31, 1964.

reply

A matter of months. So he was 13 instead of 12. There won't be a hole in the space-time continuum because of it!

I could swear I saw actress Judy Geeson (To Sir with Love) screaming and crying in the audience
