badgers? badgers!? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' BADGERS!!!

reply

Just pre-ordered mine on Amazon! Hopefullu, Criterion will give a similar treatment to Help!

reply

Sorry, no Criterion release of "Help", ever. The Beatles were always stoned during the filming of "Help" and even though the music is of course great, the picture doesn't hold a candle to "AHDN"!

Does "dual format only" in effect mean that that item will only be on the Blu-Ray disc (so that you must have Blu-Ray to get the item)?

reply

No. The dual-format release contains both a Blu-ray and a DVD on separate discs. You won't need a Blu-ray player to play the DVD.

That edition isn't "dual-format only". It's the straight DVD release that's "DVD only".

reply

But if you buy only the DVD, you won't see the extras?

reply

No, there are some extras on the DVD. But many will only be available in the dual-format edition. If you look at the details in my OP you'll see a number of extras listed as "dual-format only". The rest are on both the dual-format as well as the DVD-only releases.

What's unclear is whether in the dual-format edition the extras will be available on both the Blu-ray and DVD discs in that set. Even the Criterion product page isn't clear about this. But the straight DVD release definitely has only a limited number of extras.

Again, use the link in my OP to go directly to the Criterion product page. You may see something I missed.

That WAS actually my original question.

reply

Very sorry, it wasn't clear to me what you meant. I still don't know the answer for certain, but from what I have seen it would appear that all the extras should be available on both the Blu-ray and DVD discs in the dual-format edition. This is what Criterion's page implies, and it makes no sense for it to be otherwise, but Criterion should be a little clearer themselves.

reply

My own SUSPICION is that the DVD discs, whether bought alone or in the "dual format package", will be identical, and that extra-items listed as "dual format only" will only appear on the Blu-Ray disc in the set.

I guess I should ask whether you have any knowledge of anyone having the experience of ANY case of seeing both a 'stand-alone' DVD and a DVD from a 'combo-pack' that was issued at the same time where the combo-pack DVD contained more than the stand-alone one. (Which, if you DO, leads me to ask the industry, "What the F are you doing to us??")

Anyway, it's a popular practice at IMDb to bicker speculative points back and forth endlessly and acrimoniously. Shall we begin?

Nah, let's not!

reply

Actually I don't think so. If you look at the extras on those films Criterion has so far issued only in a dual-format edition (such as Foreign Correspondent or It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World), none of the extras is listed as "Blu-ray only". This means all extras are on both formats. (The only differences mentioned are the sound and picture, where those higher-quality elements are listed as "Blu-ray only".)

You only see the notation "dual-format edition only" for films where there is a separate DVD apart from the dual-format edition. It doesn't say "Blu-ray only" but "dual-format only". So again, that indicates that all extras are on the dual-format DVD and Blu, but that the separate DVDs have only some extras.

But I guess the proof is in the viewing. So if I may suggest, when the film is released in a couple of weeks we can post a new thread asking someone who bought the dual pack about the extras.

And, yes please, I agree -- no acrimony!
