One nice touch about the kid Ringo befriended...

Listen closely when young Charlie describes his three best mates.

Ginger's "mad...he says things all the time." Eddie is good at "punching and spitting" and Ding Dong "fancies himself."

Does that sound like three other lads to you...one who has a wild sense of humor and is always making wisecracks, one who was able to give back as good as he got to a condescending ad executive (okay, so maybe it's a stretch with George) and one who's the cutest in the group?

I had that thought, too! Especially with the John parallel.

Goonies (and neomaxizoomdweebies) never say die!

reply

Yes, I caught that parallel, too.

reply

No, I never thought of that, but it does make sense. An "in joke" kind of thing.

Norman Vincent Peale: "Stay Alive All Your Life".

The kid went on to play have a recurring role in "Keeping up Appearances" as Hyacinth Bucket's mail man.

Oh wow I never knew that. Keeping up Appearances is one of my favorite Britcoms. Nice to know.

He was also one of the stars of a popular 70s sitcom called 'Get Some IN' about young men doing their National Service in the 50s.

He also played Herr Otto Flick in 10 episodes of "'Allo 'Allo".

There's a definite - and presumably entirely intentional - parallel in that both Ringo and the kid have temporarily split off from a close circle of four friends.

Beyond that, it gets a bit dicier. The punching and spitting don't really align at all with any Beatle. Ding Dong connects with Paul, who really did fancy himself, though I don't think the Beatles and insiders acknowledged that: so it would have been very "inside" reference. Ginger for John does make sense, but that's not exactly huge.

reply

According to the recent book on the Beatles, 'Tune In', George was a scrapper.

I have looked at these boards tonight and seen some insipid comments. Like comparing The Beatles to The Spice Girls (REALLY???) Your's is spot on, mate.
