Why was the old man in their compartment in the first place?

Weren't the compartments reserved? Or was first class just 'any seat goes' ?

Of course in real life they would have been in a reserved carriage, and there would have been guards on the door to stop girls getting at them. And in fact they would be most unlikely to be on a train at all, given the difficulty of keeping people away from them.
