Christopher Plummer VS Joaquin Phoenix
Both are great as Commodus in their own ways. I will be honest. The first time I saw Fall of the Roman Empire I didn't like it. I saw Gladiator when it first came out and I loved it. But I just recently saw Fall of the Roman Empire again and I like the movie a lot more. I read up on the real emperor Commodus and I must say that Christopher Plummer is better than Joaquin's Commodus. Joaquin's Commodus is far too wimpy. Now as far as looking like Commodus, neither actor really does. They were both too small. The real emperor was described as tall, built, and quite handsome. Christopher Plummer is so much better because his character is the mad emperor, but they didn't make him the little wimpy emperor. Christopher Plummer's Commodus is actually pretty tough. The real Commodus could fight. I loved how the ending fight was at least fair. In Gladiator they had to make Commodus stab Maximus before the fight even started. Till the end, Commodus was a little coward. In Gladiator the character strays so far from the real Commodus that he begins to resemble Caligula, which got ridiculous. Commodus was far from Caligula.
Plummer and Phoenix are not the only actors I've seen portray Commodus. I've seen Sergio Ciani and Mimmo Palmara. Out of any actor playing Commodus, I must say Sergio Ciani is the very best. He is the most accurate as far as the way he looks. He is tall, muscular, atheltic, and handsome. He resembles the statues of Commodus more than anyone.
