It was a lavish effort back in the 1960s with 8,000 soldiers used in a battle scene and the reconstruction of the Roman Forum holds the record for the largest outdoor film set. Had all the potential for being a masterpiece, but ended up losing a lot of money.


The more I study it, the greater the puzzle becomes.

It was the 60's version of Gladiator of course, with better acting from Mason, Boyd and Guinness than their counterparts in Gladiator. However, found Joaquin Phoenix a quite convincing Commodus. Christopher Plummer was miscast.
