Private home or a set?

Would anyone know anything about the mansion where this movie was shot, or anything about the interiors of it? It's been a very long time since I saw this movie. The first time I saw it, I really enjoyed it ... and I would like to see it again. Bette was great. The mansion of her twin sister was elaborate as I remember the movie. Does anyone have an idea of the location of the house or the old bar where she had originally worked? I guess they were sets, but I think that I've seen that house in other of her movies but it may have been in another classic movie. I had researched it, but have run into only dead ends. Thanks for any help.

I've just watched the movie and the disc contains a small piece aboue the actual house where it was filmed, so I can tell you it was a private residence. Unfortunately, I've already returned the movie and I don't recall the name of the house.

I have owned a copy of this movie for some time, but never looked at the special features, until now. When I was looking at this site and reading these threads, I thought I'd check them out. Yes it is filmed at a private residence, the Doheny Mansion called Greystone, built in 1927 by Edward L. Doheny. That's about all they mentioned about the house itself. Hope that is some help.

The Tudor mansion Greystone Park was built by famed oil-tycoon Edward Doheny in 1928 as a gift to his son. With over 46,000 square feet of living space, it cost more than $4 million to build back then. Many people hail this massive home as one of the grandest mansions on the West coast, second only to William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon. Several Hollywood movies have been shot at Greystone, using the stately mansion and its gardens as backdrop. Actor James Woods was married at the estate.
In September 2008, then Presidential candidate Barack Obama held a $28,500-per-plate fundraiser at the Beverly Hills mansion.

The estate has been leased on a semi-permanent basis by the American Film Institute. Despite their incredible wealth (a fortune of over $100 million), the members of the Doheny family had their share of tragedy. Edward Doheny was involved with bribery charges in the infamous Teapot Dome scandal, and his son's life ended in a bizarre murder-suicide at the home. The son's widow lived on at Greystone until 1955. The estate was eventually willed to the city of Beverly Hills, and it is now a public park.

It has also been the set of many films. One that comes to mind was the 1966 horror flick Picture Mommy Dead with Don Ameche & Zsa Zsa Gabor

It was also used as the home of Hugh Jackman's character in "The Prestige"

I agree with you. His presence soiled the property, and to think I was just there the next year. I did detect somewhat of a stench in the air, though.

Edward Doheny also stiffed Frank Lloyd Wright for about $100,000 in 1929. He was a jewel of a man.

There is an extra on a DVD of the film that was recently released by WB that reveals that the location is the Doheny Mansion, a famous Oilman's luxurious digs. Don't know about the bar, but that felt more like a set.

The bar at Flower and Figueroa did exist--though it wasn't called Edie's obviously--in its place today is an area of grass and shrubs.

Anyone who votes Republican or Democrat is an idiot. Then again, that only goes for 99.5% of the American voting population. If you're wealthy enough to own Greystone, either party is a sure bet.

Actually the building was still there until a few (?) years ago. It was leveled to build a huge apartment complex, which then spectacularly burned during construction. I am assuming that it was finally completed

I have been to the mansion about 3 or 4 times over the years. In the early 90's I took a Hollywood trip with my Sister and my Best Friend and we had a chance to go in the inside of this beautiful place. It was really beautiful inside and I will never forget it.

The cocktail lounge run by Edie was a real place. In my time, it was a restaurant/cabaret called The Itchy Foote. The new buildings you see in the establishing shot are the then-new Los Angeles Music Center, where the Academy Awards ceremony was held for many years. The bar building burned down more than fifteen years ago, although the property was about to be seized by the Music Center for administrative offices. The office structure never came to pass. Back in the time the film was made, I really would have liked to visit Edie's--for LA, it looked like a rather hip place.

I was in it back in the 70's with my friend who was with the AFI. It had just been used in a Jerry Lewis movie, and they had painted all the woodwork, which did not go over well.
