Becket DVD due?

BestPrices.com is listing a DVD release date for 12/30/2005 (Mpi home video). Can this really be true?

reply

I somehow doubt it.

If you Google Becket+release+dvd+date you will get a bunch of hits that go back years that claim release dates that are all over the place (and all past). I recall seeing the Bestprices entry some time ago but Amazon does not have it and that makes me suspicious.

You are new here (to the Becket boards). Frustrating, isn't it?

FYI it seems that the UPC for this DVD was assigned in 2003. If you do a search you will pick up a few outlets that claim a release date of 12/30/05. You will also find release dates in 2004, 2003 and so on.

Becket UPC 030306105390

Incidentially, the ever useless MPI website makes no mention of a release date and they should know, or not.

reply

Many thanks incitatus-1 for the information. I have just signed the petition! I remember a few years ago reading that there was some ownership issue over this film. The company went bust or was taken over (avco embassy I think?). Maybe this is still holding things up. You would think they would sort it out as there must be money to be made from a DVD release. A classic with two multi-oscar nominated actors that was very well received when it was first screened.

We hates them, precious......

Becket is on my "wish list" at half.com and I received an e-mail that it is now available... I am little leary of this, though... I mostly have been searching to see what the "features" are on the DVD and have since found that no one knows anything about there even being one... Surely this one listed on half.com is not a-one-of-a-kind..??? **S**

After reading these posts, I went to half.com to check it out, and there were two "factory sealed" copies for sale, dated 2003. ("Were" being the operative term, as I bought one of them.)

reply

And as you found out (if you read the fine print) the "2003 release" is actually scheduled for release on 12/31/05. The old Becket two step. Get your money back.

Check out http://www.chace.com/Pages/news.html this is a website connected to CHACE PRODUCTIONS who were supposedly remastering the sound for the DVD release of BECKET back in early 2003. Click onto the February 2003 edition(scroll down on right of screen) and you will see Randall Smith and Greg Faust in the mixing studio with the title of BECKET in the background.

Why wasn't this ever released? Your guess is as good as mine?

Peter Mason

No ... that release date IS NOT true. I wrote to MPI and they replied:

While we do plan to release that title on DVD within the next 6-8
months, there is no firm release date for the title at this time.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Amazingly, I got the same reply from MPI except that they said "late next year".

I pressed my luch and asked why was it taking so long and they said that the film was still undergoing "restoration". I was really afraid to ask WTF was going on since it was restored for the Tribeca Film Festival last year but images of the Soup Nazi went thru my head and I thought that they might say "That's it! No Becket for you. Two more years!!!"

So....maybe, perhaps.......

In fairness, MPI responded in like 15 minutes two each of my two emails. Might I suggest that the 7 people who show up here email MPI and give a laural and hardy handshake for their efforts (and STAY IN LINE!!)

n.b. A thought just occured to me. Suppose, after all of this time, when I buy the DVD and watch it, I say to myself "God this sucks". Scarey hought.

PS. Did I mention somewhere that I read that O'Toole recorded a multi hour commentary? Cool.

reply

Yes and no. They acutally say that it is due to be released BUT read what they say:

"Availability: This title will be released on December 31, 1969. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives "

Pretty darn funny. I suspect that they are, in fact setting up the pre order screen and just screwed up. Odd as this is, it is the most promising thing that I have come across is a long time. What I mean is, regardless of screwed up date, Amazon is actually talking about a release.

Just to add another voice to the chorus of Becket/DVDers, I caught a release date of 10/14/05 on Buy.com, queried them on it and got a "manufacturer problem" from customer service. How is it that we can't seem to get the real story here? Is it such a sordid tale, that it can't speak its name? We need a tipping point.

reply

By the way, just signed the petition, no. 184. Thanks for doing this.

As I expected. Amazon sez:

"Please note "December 31, 1969" is not the actual release date for this product. We are currently working on a fix and will display the correct release date shortly."

First off, I am proud that an influential American company can admit to a mistake. Further, I am gratified that after only a few short weeks said company, after many internal discussions involving many high level executives, could determine that a "To be released" date cannot occur in the past. Kudos, and that is why I am proud to be an American and why terrorists the world over hate us.

But seriously, this means that

1)they are actually aware of the film (major step)
2)they are scurrying about to put a real release date in.

I think that their posting a date, when that happy event occurs, will warrent a new thread filled with joyous noises and huzzas.

I hope this doesn't get anyone's hopes up unduly, but somebody has posted a promising message in the discussion forums over at the DVDTalk website. They say that MPI has sent out an e-mail/press release to its mailing list announcing that "Becket" will be released in the 3rd quarter of 2006. I personally did not see the e-mail, so I don't know if it's true. But with all the continued interest, I thought I should share. I'm really looking forward to the eventual DVD release of this title, especially if that rumor about O'Toole providing a commentary is true!

Here is a link to that particular thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447973

He is right, as I emailed them too and received the same response.

got this today regarding Becket from MPI

"We are still prepping that release, but there is no release date available
at this time."

At least it sounds like it's coming!!

Amazon.com has been promising the Becket DVD as "forthcoming" for two years now. Currently, it doesn't even list it as an item, which makes me think that the release of this film on Becket has fallen through for some financial and/or legal reason. Does anybody have up to date information?
