Helicopters in WWII?

In the beginning of the movie a helicopter flies around telling all sides that the war is over. I don't ever seem to recall helicopters being available in WWII.
Does anyone know about this?

Yes, there were helicopters in World War II, but they were still a relatively new technology and as a result played an inconsequential role.

Cool thank you for the info!!

Helicopters might have been around in WWII, but those models certainly weren't. At best, Choppers were nothing more than gyro's.

Famed German aviatrix Hannah Reiche flew a helicopter indoors during the 1938 Berlin Motor Show hovering it in front of huge crowds. She did it nightly for two weeks. You can't hover gyros in one spot or they come down. Gyros will not work without forward movement to keep the blades turning. This helo had two blades one right and one left instead of a tail rotor. The blades counter rotated to prevent the helo spinning.

Helicopters went into mass production in 1942. So they may well have been used in the final days of WWII. I once met a pilot who flew for Sikorsky on helicopters in the mid to late 30s, and Sikorsky didn't invent the helicopter, so it's possible they were fairly advanced by 1945.

Helicopter were used both by the Allies and the Axis during World War 2, but only in small numbers, and not operationally! The RAF, USAAF & US Navy used versions of the Sikorsky Grasshopper. One can be seen in the RAF Museum at Hendon.
