It is never explained why Bill Holden, an American, is fighting in Malaya with the rebels? Was he a rubber planter before the war? Or was he one of Errol Flynns boys from "Objective Burma" who got lost along the way??
At the very beginning of the film, when the rebels arrive at the ceremony the British have set up to take the Japanese surrender, the English officer Trumphey describes him to a subordinate as, "Major Farris, an American engineer with the 8th Australian. After we lost Singapore he was in one of the stay-behind parties."

Yes, it's certainly explained why he was fighting with the rebels, as the rebels were fighting against the Japanese too. Has parallels in Syria today. 🐭
