help with a punch line

last night on Cozi, they showed "Bats of a Feather" Eddie thinks he is taking Igor to the pet fair at school (It was actually Grandpa but he didn't know). One of Eddie's classmates asked if he can catch a rat. Eddie replies something like "only when he tries to dance" and the laugh track went off. I have no idea what that meant. Anyone? thanks

Maybe it's got something to do with the story "The Pied Piper of Hamelin".

Annoying the world since 1960!

I just saw that episode today and I never even noticed the particular joke until you mentioned it. Unfortunately I have no idea what it refers to. I watch a lot of old shows and I notice that jokes often refer to pop culture or news stories that are topical at the time it was written but 20 or 30 years later nobody knows what the heck they're talking about. I wonder if this joke is in that category.

no idea

... Somebody have the YouTube mark? I would like to hear that that is what was really said

It's pretty close to what paulfreed originally posted. When Eddie unveils his pet bat one of his classmates asks "does it catch rats?". Eddie replies "only when it feels like dancing". Must be some obscure pop culture reference that people would have understood in 1965(?)

I wondered if it might be some reference to the Batman TV series but that didn't come out until a year later.

Virtually un-Googlable. Im afraid thats going to go down the memory hole unless someone gets a hold of Butch Patrick. He may know.

I thought the joke was hilarious. Its well known that bats can catch rats and other rodents but only after they do whats called a Bat Dance while flying in mid air. Reason being is because the rat then stops to watch the bat dance. Its very interesting watching a bat try to dance in the air. But then the bat suddenly swoops down and snatches by surprises the rat before it could run off. I happen to be an expert in bat behavior
