Villains you would have liked to make returns

Which villains that survived their first encounter with our two agents would have you liked to return ?

Here's my list :

G.Emory Partridge ( George Sanders ) : Ok , he did two , but I believe he should have done more . I know no one will be that surprised to see him on top of my list . I believe it would have been funnier to find him in every different season as the self-proclaimed leader of a new imaginary state . And every time we could have met a different member of his dysfunctional family . Fortunately Jason Segel wasn't born yet at the time , so no one could possibly suggest that he could have been introduced as his grandson .

Dr.Egret : the concept for the character was so great , you can never know how she will look the next time she will appear . Pity she was used only twice . Plus , in "Girls of Nazarone" , even if you can't possibly imagine that Madame Alceste is actually the diabolical scientist wearing a disguise , it's still clear from the start that we aren't dealing with an honest , innocent woman . It would have been more intriguing if in her later appearances , Egret would have sometimes been disguised as the innocent girl of the week for a good part of the episode . That would have helped made the character even more interesting and fierce . Had she been used a few times every year and not only a couple of times in the first two seasons , she could have become a very iconic character . Plus it would have been the scientist's basic requirement to be played by a different actress every time , so there wasn't the risk to have to write her out of the show at one point .

Dr.Agnes Dabree ( Elsa Lanchester ) : I just don't know why she was never brought back . Probably Elsa had other work commitments . She would have made a difficult villain to beat : sure we found out she's hard to kill .

Vladeck ( Leonard Nimoy ) : Would have not been ironic if by eliminating Ambassador Kurasov and getting him replaced by his assistant , Napoleon and Illya had actually created a much more dangerous enemy for their own organization ? I thought that Vladeck actually looked much more evil and menacing than his predecessor .

Satine ( Ricardo Montalban ) : Not really a villain , I know , but a complex character and formidable opponent for Solo that could have been a great match for U.N.C.L.E again . Had he thought that he had his own good reasons to fight the organization , it would have been possible . But I think that he should have returned before "The King of Diamonds Affair" ( where Montalban played Rafael Delgado ) , otherwise it could have been a bit confusing .

Major Vicek ( Albert Paulsen ) : He could have been that kind of guy that does all the dirty deeds for many secret polices all around the world . It would have been funny if our men had kept meeting him during their international missions .

Colonel Hubris ( Victor Buono ) : Even if "The Deadly Goddess Affair" wasn't very good , Victor Buono rocked as the villain , as usual . I would have not minded to see more of this character . It was a genial creation worthy of an actor touched by genius . That laugh !

Now , even if I absolutely loved Martin Landau in the role , I don't think Count Zark could have possibly returned . The villain would have felt out of place if taken out of a Transylvanian setting and he would have become monotonous if seen again .

On the other hand , even if I didn't like Anne Francis' performance , I think that Gervaise Ravel is a character that could have become interesting had she been fleshed out more . I think they could have worked much more on the hate relationship between her and Marion . I always found strange that Marion didn't seem to hold a very big grudge against Gervaise in "Giuoco Piano" and initially didn't seem too keen to have revenge on her , despite the fact that she ordered the attack that caused her father to lose his own life . Ok , Richard Anderson's character had already paid for that, but it remains that he was actually working for Gervaise . It seems like that apart from punching her in the face saying "that's a new experience to you !" Marion didn't enjoy very much her vendetta on the villainess . Plus , with her beloved Bufferton gone ( even if the relationship between the two characters was another very undeveloped subplot ) Gervaise could have been even more bitter and angry with Napoleon , Illya and Marion . I think she could have become a good foe for U.N.C.L.E . But maybe the character should have been recast and given to a more charismatic and menacing actress than Anne Francis .

Now , how about the villains you regret that they got killed ? If you can think of some , you can say it here . I thought this topic didn't deserve his own thread , because personally I have only one and he is ( I'm sure Agent A. would agree with me ) Mr.Frame .

I thought that "Project Deephole Affair" would have been even better had he been the villain instead of Marvin Elom , another blind THRUSH agent . Sure Leon Askin wasn't remotely as sinister or fearsome as Berry Kroeger . Another reason I believe they could have graced Mr.Frame is that he died a very banal death : he just got shot . There are other great villains that could have not been killed , but actually brought back , but I think they were all served much better and given very memorable death scenes . That's the reason I don't regret very much they were eliminated .

Ah, but perhaps Jason [Segel] can be summoned for the upcoming MFU film. Naturally I jest, but stranger things have happened. Will Smith as James T. West, for instance.

I believe that if they were going to put Emory in the movie ( something I would love to see ) they would go for someone older . And quintessentially British . But just like you said , you can never know ..

Also, Estelle Winwood played a, Hester Partridge, in the season three opener Her Master's Voice Affair. Could she possibly be related in some way? Also Michael Rennie played a, Barnaby Partridge, in one of your least favorite season four eps, The THRUSH Roulette Affair. Kin? Maybe? I'm just throwing it out there.

Ah , I didn't remember about this . I suppose my mind tried to erase anything about "THRUSH Roulette" . So at least there was a character named Partridge in every season . I think Sanders and Rennie would have not been so unbelievable as brothers .

Of course I will add the non-traditional villains Angelique, played by the sexually ambiguous Janine Gray (Deadly Games) and Serena, played deliciously by Senta Berger (Double Affair). And also in that category, a very controversial choice, Count Cesare Guardia, played by Cesare Danova (When In Rome). And even more controversial and sacreligious, Heavenly Cortelle (Hong Kong Shilling).

Does Heavenly count as a villainess ? After all , she had been with the Hong Kong police all the time in the episode . I think that they should have made a choice between Angelique and Serena if they wanted to bring one back . Otherwise , the characters would have turned out to be too similar and would have had the same kind of relationship with Solo . I would have brought back Angelique only . Sure her character didn't come off as very well written in "Deadly Games" , but there were some interesting aspects about her that could have been developed .

With regards to Gervaise Ravel, I think the powers that be had plans for more episodes, but Honey West prevented that.

I'm not sure about that . "Quadripartite" and Giuoco Piano" were supposed to be the two parts of a double episode , but were later released separately . That's the reason Gervaise appeared twice , it's not like the writers brought her back since they had thought she was such an amazing character . That's something that was actually done just once , with .. well , you know . Plus , Anne could have returned in Seasons 3 and 4 , after the cancellation of Honey West .

I would have loved this character to return and become sexually involved with Napoleon. It would be a complex affair in which, after her arrest, she swears allegiance to U.N.C.L.E. and volunteers to use her old connections to help dismantle T.H.R.U.S.H., which, to the best of my knowledge, she never belonged to in the first place. Obviously, her loyalty to UNCLE is a facade to cover her real intentions, which are ....

I really don't think Napoleon could have become sexually involved with Gervaise . Serena and Angelique are a different matter . They were spies like him ,they just acted for a different cause . But Gervaise , she was more like a terrorist . Someone who would have not had any hesitation to commit genocide . I don't think Napoleon could have managed to have sex with her .

However, since this is the realm of TV fiction, any villain can return whether killed or not. There is always the prequel, or, the "we thought he was dead but he wasn't really" device.

That's true . But MFU never used the prequel technique ( as a matter of fact I don't think there was a single flashback in the entire show run ) , nor ventured too much into the realm of science-fiction , which would prevent some villains to return through some very unrealistic ways of resuscitation , clonation etc .. So I don't think people like Brach or Brother Love could have ever been brought back . Others could have ..

As a side issue afterthought, Ida Lupino would have made a great villain. She was doing this a bit in the mid 1960's but not on MFU. Bummer.

Totally agree . She was wonderful as Dr.Faustina in "Night of the Big Blast" , one of my favourite WWW eps .

I'd loved to have seen Mr. Frame make several return visits (he'd certainly have made a superb head of THRUSH Central). Um, let's see....well, not having Dr. Debre back to "make Mr. Solo pay his pound of flesh" was unforgivable. Vincent Price was certainly a wonderful choice to play the charmingly sinister Victor Marton in "The Foxes And The Hounds Affair", and as far as I'm concerned the only problem with "The Discotheque Affair" is there wasn't more Mr. Oakes. That Eric Braeden is one of the most intimidating actors I've ever seen when it comes to displaying quiet menace that can turn into blind rage. I love Ray Danton's Dean Martinish villainy, too, but Braeden provided the real danger in this episode and it was a shame they killed him off so quickly.

Oh, I forgot to mention Reta Shaw's delightfully stern grandmother of a THRUSH official in 'The Suburbia Affair' (a nice change from the usual sort of actors cast as villians in this type of action genre), and Viktor Karmak in 'Deadly Quest Affair' is great, too and largely because Mcgavin is one of those rare actors who's just as good- and, therefore, easy to accept- playing a baddie as he is playing heroic characters. It would have been lovely to see Karmak return for a rematch with Solo.

I agree , McGavin was great in the role . But you see , that "Most dangerous Game" type of hunt usually can result only in one way : death . And the reason I didn't put him in my list is because his demise made my "Most memorable deaths" list , so it would have been a pity not to close the game in that unforgettable way . Mr.Frame on the other hand , he was taken away from us by a banal bullet ..

I was thinking that it would have been funny to have an episode involving G.Emory Partridge and his brother , if the brother in question had been played by Tom Conway . I believe it is an unlikely scenario , though , as Tom was really brought down by his alcohol problems in his last years of life ( he died in 1967 ) .

Personally, a cross over would have been really cool. . Say Wo Fat from Hawaii Five-O!. .

Have the boys get together with McGrabbit to go after the eternal "fat man"

I'm in the middle of the third season. I really liked Jack Palance as Strago in "The Concrete Overcoat Affair." Robert Culp did a great job as Capt. Shark. Andrew Vulcan from "The Vulcan Affair." Vincent Price was deliciously evil!

Yes, I am a member of the message board and grammar police. Since 1998.
