'Goodbye Camp Henderson, Hello Sergeant Carter' episode

Was this intended to be the last episode of "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."? It seemed the writers were heads & tails about whether or not to make this the last ep., seeing as how Sgt. Carter had Pyle's transfer orders rescinded. This series could've lasted another three seasons, & wasn't suffering in the overall ratings by the fifth season.

It's a good thing it ended when it did. The show was starting to get a little shop-worn. As has been commented on here Gomer was going into his second hitch which for sure he would have been sent to the motor pool, mess hall, or something along those lines. Gomer trying to be a fighting Marine was done.

It would've been interesting to see Gomer Pyle being promoted to the rank of corporal while still retaining his classic bumbling naivete. The only downside to Season Five is the absence of Cpl. Chuck Boyle (Roy Stuart). Why was the Cpl. Boyle character written out of the show? He was the straight man & the voice of reason to Sgt. Carter & Gomer Pyle, always retaining a cool demeanor with those around him.
