Two Sergeant Carters

Was it confusing for audiences back in the day when this show was on with a character named Sergeant Carter at the same time Hogan's Heroes was on which also featured a character named Sergeant Carter?

My friend once said "I hate signatures, but I love irony."

reply

yes im sure people would confuse them all the time. it probably led to the cancellation of both series.

reply

Speaking only for myself, I watched both shows and never got the two sergeants confused. Maybe because they were so different, imo. It does seem odd, though, that both shows would have two different characters with the same title and name.

YOU CAN SAY WHATEVER YOU WANT ABOUT THE SOUTH, BUT YOU NEVER SEE SOUTHERNERS HEADING NORTH WHEN THEY RETIRE.

reply

It seems more odd now that I know from Jim Nabor's DVD commentary that Gomer Pyle, Andy Griffith, and Hogan's Heroes were all filmed on adjacent lots at the same studio. The cast and crews ate lunch together.

reply

It's ironic that Larry Hovis, the actor who portrayed "Sgt. Carter" on Hogan's Heroes, also partook of several of the earlier shows of "Gomer Pyle".

reply

In the pilot episode of Hogans Heros Larry Hovis' character is a Lt. who is later changed to Sgt.

He was also Gilly on a couple TAGS episodes.

"To my cherished antagonist"

reply

Of course not. Frank Sutton was Sgt. VINCENT Carter and Larry Hovis was Sgt. ANDREW Carter. Also Sgt. Vince Carter was from Wichita, KS while Sgt. Andrew Carter was from Bullfrog, ND.

reply

The actor who played "Hannibal Dobbs" on "F-Troop", also, appeared on one episode as a fellow tarheel.

reply

how about the basketball player-vince carter. i remember as a child the fugitve and green acres both had a kimble ! though spelled differently

reply

Hank Kimball...LOL. He was one of my alltime favorite TV characters. Well, not alltime, but....well, yeah you could say. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, the average Hooterville tomato has an IQ equivalent to a normal seven year old. Well, uh see ya around Mr. What was your name again? Oh okay see ya around Douglas Oliver Wendell Douglas.

reply

What's to be confused about? Unless you never knew two people with the same last name in your life, there's no reason to be confused about a 1940s Army sergeant and a 1960s Marine sergeant.

Were you also confused because Donald Hollinger never told That Girl he dated for six years that he had spent time in the Marines under Sgt. Carter? Or did you wonder why another of Gomer's fellow platoon members was later known to have been a priest in the Army during the Korean war?

We were pretty sophisticated in those days. When we saw an actor or actress in a guest spot and knew we had seen him/her in the same series in a different role, we understood it was just a given actor or actress playing a different role. We didn't say, "Why doesn't Gomer recognize this person from a few weeks ago?"
