Goobers Visit

I saw the episode yesterday where cousin Goober appeared. Goober said he was quitting Wally's station to join Gomer. But it turns out in the end Gomer and his gang including Carter convince Goober to head back to Mayberry. Who knows how the rest of TAGS would've been if Goober had joined the marines w/Gomer? I thought Goober already had some military experience in the national guard

reply

I don't think the Marines could have survived both of them. ;-)

Hmmm, maybe so ... but only if they were on two different bases. ;-)

I thought Brother Dave Gardner said that.

I'm not familiar with Brother Dave Gardner, but it is certainly possible he said it.

Whoever said it - it's true.

Can you imagine Goob doing his imitations of Cary Grant, Edward G. Robinson, or Chester from Gunsmoke for some big shot general? ROFL!!! But he wouldn't be able to do William Holden cause he talks like everybody else. : )

I just thought of something. How come Gomer didn't work in the motor pool with the Marines?

reply

Since Gomer was supposed to foul things up, it wouldn't have been easy to come up with scripts where he did this while engaged in performing a job that he already knew how to do. It was far easier to foul up with a bazooka, or baking bread, or handling supplies, etc.

When you think about the motor pool on the Phil Silvers Show, they never had plots about mechanical goof-ups. Bilko got away with some things because he got his motor pool to do a great job with the post's vehicles. As I think about it, I don't know how they could have gotten many laughs even if Gomer fouled up a spark plug job or let the oil spill onto the floor.
