Camp Henderson's locale

Judging from the storyline, it would appear Camp Henderson's location to be in San Diego (named after Camp Pendleton, of course), although San Diego is never mentioned at any time in "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.". It is mentioned that Los Angeles is a couple of hours away, so that secures San Diego as the city being mentioned as to the location of Camp Henderson. This sitcom was filmed at Paramount Studios.

I've always considered Camp Henderson just outside San Diego myself. I think there was an episode that said the Mexican border was close by.

Actually, San Diego was mentioned in script. It appeared on a turtle PFC Frankie Lombardi carried aboard a Navy ship in the Season 2 episode "Cat Overboard". The ship's captain discovered the turtle & threw it overboard due to it being contraband. Great episode!

I assume it was a fictionalized version of Camp Pendelton. In one episode gomer mention taking a bus to Oceanside which is near camp Pendelton

In the episode where Sgt. Carter goes back home to visit his mother in Wichita, Kansas Corporal Slater first asks Carter if he's going to San Diego, the nearest large city presumably.

I always thought it was a fictional camp located where Camp Pendleton is, but named after Archibald Henderson, the Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps.
