you know, that would make a good sitcom today if done right (not bloody likely)make the humor as dark as a formation at 0 dark 30. GI humor is VERY dark. keep gomer the same naive, good natured bumpkin but make him the deadliest sniper in the corps, have himm pull off impossible shots like the magic bullet theory in jfk. kind of like forrest gump with all that impossible stuff he pulled in vietnam. gomer saves the day by dropping terrorists like legolas with his bow and arrow. the tango's fear him, call him something like ' the scourge of muslims or the martyr maker' or something like that but gomer is such a bumbler he can't make lance corporal.
it could work if you cut out the political correctness

Gomer CAN be a good marine but his thinking is completely different from other 'normal' people. He thinks about everything as it relates to country life.

You think Kerry was a "radical liberal"? Damn, HOW FAR RIGHT ARE YOU? He was way to middle of the road, wishy-washy, I think. I would prefer someone far more radically leftist than him. I can't even imagine him in the marines BACK THEN. He's a soft, gay, pushover. There was nothing tough about him at all. He attending old ladie's nitting classes and went to flower shows. He would go to the park at night just to watch the street lights come on. There is no way someone like him could FIGHT, let alone KILL an enemy soldier.

The first time he said, "SHAZAM!" he'd find a real genie, and it would become a whole other sitcom. I also agree with greendimension - the show was full of Gomer's naivete succeeding where other people's shrewdness DOESN'T succeed. (Of course, naivete was pretty much what STARTED this war, but not HIS kind!

He turned out to be surprisingly tough on one of the early episodes of Season 1 which we saw recently - the one where he has to fight an ornery fellow recruit with a huge chip on his shoulder. Gomer fought like a pro - gave him a good licking. Shazam!
