Allan Melvin died January 17, 2008. Sargeant Hacker was one of my favorite characters on GP.

I heard. I didn't like his character at first but he grew on me a lot. He was pretty funny messing up Carter all the time.

I did not like Sergeant Hacker when he pull some mean stunts on Pyle. He and other Marine play a cruel trick where they got a woman at some kit cat joint to be Gomer's girlfriend and then when Gomer found out what the lady did for a living, he was hurt very badly. Another time, Hacker was bribing Pyle with food, so he could find out where was Gomer's platoon, so he could win the war game against Sgt. Carter.

He often played a curmudgeon, but he sure was a great actor. I loved him on every show he was on.

This was the first I heard of his death. I agree that he was almost always played a cranky role but he was a good actor. He had several bad guy parts on Andy Griffith, including a goon of the lady (later to play Grandma Walton) who sold Barney the junk car.

Later on, he played on Archie Bunker's Place. I think he was a bar tender or perhaps the co-owner at that bar Archie bought at the start of that series. I think he was involved in the prank played on Archie at a lodge convention, when Archie passed out drunk and his buddies paid a Negro call girl to get into the bed with him before he woke up, then convince him that they had been together for the night.

BTW, in which season did he start playing Hacker on Gomer? I just bought the Season 1 DVD. Of course in that one there is Sgt. Wiffle (spelling?) at the barracks next door.

No he wasn't Archie's bartender or co-owner of the bar. He lived across the street from the Bunkers. His name was Barney Hefner.

Yeah, he was pretty funny. I always enjoyed the episodes where he and Sgt. Carter had some kind of bet going and invariably Gomer would get caught in the middle. I remember a couple of terrific episodes with him. In one he and Carter had arranged for Gomer to race against an Indian named Yellow Bear. And in one scene, Hacker was trying to convince Gomer to lose the race on purpose so that Yellow Bear wouldn't have to "go back to his tepee on the shores of Lake Gitchygoomee in disgrace, only to gnaw on bones around the cooking fires" LOL. Of course he wanted Gomer to lose so that he'd win a bet with Carter.

Yeah, that was a good episode. Allan Melvin was a great character actor. How about the one where Hacker bet Carter that he couldn't control his temper for 24 hours? Hacker had Pyle go into the duty hut and break Carters prized sword right in front of him! At one point, Carter was so mad that he had to drive the jeep out into the country so that he could run on top of a hill and scream!

Was also Sam the Butcher on The Brady Bunch. Kept Alice supplied with MEAT!

That is one of my all-time favorite TV episodes. Gomer did so many things that day (some provoked by Hacker) and you could see Carter was so close to exploding. Then the shot where Carter drives up to the hill overlooking the valley, parks his Jeep, gets out and starts screaming at the top of his lungs. Watched the original when I was in high school. Great entertainment

Allan Melvin was a great character actor. Many of his roles were soldiers and sailors. He made eight guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show" as eight different characters. After "Archie Bunker's Place" ended in 1983 his work was exclusively devoted to cartoon voice overs.
