Great ratings for the show. Why did it end?

I have a book "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-Present"that lists yearly rating for shows. This show was # 3 year one, # 2 year two, # 10 year three, # 3 year four and in it's final season it was the # 2 ranked show for the year. Normally with ratings that high a show doesn't end. Maybe they just ran out of story ideas or Jim Nabors felt he was done?

Nabors informed CBS that five years was enough. The fifth season was noticeably weaker than the first four. If there was a sixth I think the ratings would have fallen off quite a bit. It probably would have not gotten past a sixth as at that point CBS did its infamous rural purge.
