When Gomer was to drive to Los Angeles to pick up a visiting general, he kept getting lost, and repeatedly phoned Sgt. Carter to get directions.

One of those times he was in Pasadena, very close to the Rose Bowl. Oblivious to how exasperated Carter was, worrying about Gomer arriving in time to pick up the general, Gomer smiled and told Carter, "Just think...if this was New Year's Day, I wouldn't be able to get anywheres near this place."
