I assume you're talking about the episode with Glenn Ash playing the part of this big guy named Moose Louis who used to work with Gomer at Wally's Filling Station in Mayberry, but now is a star with the Boston Bulldogs. I always wondered why they didn't just use the names of the real football teams in that episode. Back in the mid '60s the New England Patriots were actually called the Boston Patriots. So they could have had the Boston Patriots playing either the San Diego Chargers or Los Angeles Rams....and yes, the Rams played in L.A. before moving to St. Louis.

I am assuming they didn't or couldn't use the name of a real team.
"To my cherished antagonist"
You're probably right. I know sports teams are real funny about marketing and all that stuff. That's why so many major league baseball teams nowadays must have half a dozen different uniform styles. And when they're showing the film clip of the two football teams playing just before Sarge gets knocked out it kind of looks to me like maybe it's UCLA and USC playing. Kind of hard to tell though. But still I imagine in reality it would have been the Boston Patriots and either the L.A. Rams or San Diego Chargers in the mid '60s.
shareThe AFL teams did not play any NFL teams (Super Bowl aside) before 1970. So Gomer and the Sarge would have gone to San Diego to see Boston. Mildly surprising they did not use a contending city at the time such as NYJ, Oakland, or Houston.
shareThe NFL and NFL teams have been very protective of their copyrights even back when "Gomer Pyle USMC" was on the air. Back then the Boston Patriots were in the old AFL (American Football League) before they merged with the NFL. I assume AFL teams were also protective of their copyrights. They probably used stock footage for the football game.
Gomer and Sgt. Carter could have attended a stock car race. Jim Nabors sang "Back Home Again in Indiana" before the Indianapolis 500 for many years.
I agree. I think it was stock footage of probably a UCLA game although the shots were from so far away that it was almost impossible to tell. And you're right about the old AFL back in the '60s. I remember going to an Oilers game when I was a kid in the late '60s at the Astrodome. It sure was nice when going to a pro game was affordable.
shareThe Arena Football League and some other indoor leagues are still affordable. Those leagues aren't the NFL, but are usually a lot of fun.
shareI've gotten to where I go to the local college games at McNeese State University. Like the Arena Football League it's not the NFL, but I enjoy the tailgating parties and the games are pretty good and for a lot less than NFL games. Plus I don't have to get on I-10 and drive to Houston or New Orleans and fight the heavy traffic...LOL.
