True_Grits: "You're right about that, but TV viewers have a way of conflating characters with the actors playing them and Gomer Pyle pretty much turned into a brand over the years."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gomer Pyle has largely vanished over the decades, other than 'citizens arrest' bits on The Andy Griffith show.
I'm up early so I'm watching Gomer Pyle which is now airing on MeTV, but at four-thirty in the morning, hardly primetime viewing. I grew up on the show and haven't seen these early episodes in almost forty years.
If a person who is black appears lacking in education, it is considered racist to decide all persons of that race must be the same.
Seems to me the same could be said for deducing if Bill O'Reilly decides something about Leave It To Beaver, then all those who think conservatively must do the same.
If O'Reilly wants to hold up Beaver Cleaver as representation of a simpler time, that's his business, but that doesn't mean everyone else drones right into it.
And for the record, Gomer never stood for wholesome Americana anymore than Goober did. George Lindsey was hetero. Did conservatives get away with that one? Or was that a slap in the face to liberal America?
Rumors about Nabors go back forty years, buddy boy. Anybody who was a fan of Gomer Pyle or the Andy Griffith show or anything else Nabors did was pretty well aware of it.
Shame you missed out on that information network, my friend.
