Show cancelled because of high production costs?

Various internet sources say this show had high ratings, but production costs were so high that it was cancelled.

It was a relatively crude cartoon with (for the most part) voice actors. It would be at least 10 more years before Matheson became expensive.

Cne anyone explain?

Quality was comparable to The Flintstones, but this had a new location every episode. Flintstones reused the same backgrounds in every episode.

Correct, and I believe there were far more mats used in JQ than even when the Flintstones went somewhere new. I also think the detail was better.

That makes sense. Thanks.

In addition to Satan's response (hell of an answer), I read that if HB had understood residuals from reruns, they might have taken a break-even scenario first run for years of rerun residuals.

I think even 3 full seasons would have been enough. By now of course, it would be sanitized down to 15 minute shows or more likely just cancelled completely, but they could have run this for 20 years or so if they made more.

Not considering residuals was a sign of the times decision.

Exactly. Most shows except maybe for Lucy didn't run consistently in reruns except for the summer. If Paramount had known what a juggernaut Star Trek would turn out to be 5 years after it left the first run air, they very likely would have done at least two more seasons.
