What is it? In a review of the TSL DVD and on criterion's website this term is used. I'm guessing it's like italian neo-realism, but what are some other films that are kitchensink realism?
Well, it's a term often used for British social-realistic films. Similar to Italian neo-realism in respect of trying to describe the truth/reality. But unlike the Italian neo-realism, the actors are usually proffessional. Also, the neo-realists have a more exctened use of long takes, describing "daily life" or the world in general. Kitchen-sink realists are (in general) more conserned about the story-line of the film.
This is, of course, not a very in-depth description, but I hope you get an impression.
The term kitchen-sink realisim is rooted in the fact that many British social-realistic films had scenes from typical, worn-out, working-class kitchens. It's ment to give impression of what kind of dramas taking place in the film; social troubles rooted in working-class, social heritage etc. etc.
If you want to learn about these films, check out the directors Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. Two of the best in their ganre.
the term is the antithesis of the italian "white telephone" films of the 1930s. films where all the characters were well-off enough to have ornate white telephones in their homes. no such phones in the kitchen sink films.
this one is by far my favorite of that genre, btw.
richard harris is like paul newman and brando combined in this film.
