Now it could all be in my head, but I swear that it looked as if Harris was wearing eyeliner all through the movie, with the exception of one scene, half-way through, in the pub scene, where his eyes looked different..
Now I'm a retired makeup artist, so I notice this stuff!!!
But it honestly did appear to be eyeliner........surely I'm not the only one who noticed this?

Ya i watched this when you did, the wk before last.? i'd seen bits of it once before & always wanted to watch the whole thing so i finally got to. Love miserabale british melodrama!! & this one really takes the cake.
Yes, I agree with you ~ he must've been wearing liner under his lower lashes. It gave him an evil look but maybe it was also used to give him a grimey coalminer's look with stained skin. He wasn't handsome but attractive in a base way. And he was very well-proportioned bodywise, i couldn't help notice. i'd like to see it again, after reading a lot of these posts. one of those movies that takes at least twice viewing to take it all in. for me anyway. : >) : >

As a retired makeup artist, I have a different 'take' on the eyeliner....it was MISSING in one scene, towards the end of the movie, where he's in a pub....the liner definitely made his eyes a lot more noticeable......when he didn't have it on, he looked a little 'washed out'...perhaps that's why they chose to use it, and of course your idea about being the 'grimy coalminer' is very valid, also.......
I liked the movie, just felt it was a little too long for the story it had to tell!!
It was too noticeable. At times it seemed like there was something on his lashes, especially lower, as well. It may have been an effect of the lighting as well. To me, it made him look creepy at times, or at least very strange.
shareHe put it on to intensify his stare, Marlon Brando and some other early actors used similar technique sometimes. Richard Harris was clearly mimicking Brando in this.
