THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, released on this day

Released on this day--10 Feb.--in 1963, Mario Bava's THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. Starring the striking Letícia Román and the struck John Saxon, the film--about an American woman visiting Rome who becomes embroiled in an increasingly bizarre murder mystery--was the founding document of what became the giallo subgenre. The gialli were much more diverse than some of their contemporary fans allow but this film and Bava's BLOOD & BLACK LACE the next year established much of the template most would use--and do to death--in the decades that followed. Bava was one of the finest genre directors the medium ever produced and his remarkable visual flourishes are all over it. A year later--and 2 months after BLOOD & BLACK LACE premiered in Italy--it would be somewhat modified and released in the U.S. as THE EVIL EYE.
