Petition Criterion for a Blu-Ray?

If there is any one movie of Welles' that I would want to see Criterion release (& now on Blu Ray), it is this one. For years people have argued that because it is public domain, Criterion doesn't want to release it (ie. wouldn't be profitable)....but all the US dvd releases have been sub-par. The French edition is alleged to be best & it is set for another re-pressing, so it can't be all that much of a bank buster. If Criterion can release a Brakhage 2x blu ray set, Wes Anderson dreck, or a dud like Hausu on Blu Ray, why not this?

If you have a multi-region dvd player, grab the French edition. I did back when it came out and it is a GREAT transfer.

A blu-ray of this would be absolutely magnificent. I'm surprised it hasn't been done, considering it's now in Public Domain and the original negatives still exist.

For now, your best bet is the Studio Canal/Universal Pictures version, which was released on DVD in 2009. A really wonderful transfer indeed. It's just a shame it doesn't include the "Before the Law" bit at the very start of the film.

Both it and Chimes at Midnight will inevitably get Criterion releases at some point.

I hope you're right about Chimes. I had to watch a cruddy downloaded version of it and it still blew me away. Also, OP: Hausu a dud? No way.

Studio Canal will release it in the UK, but i am pretty sure it will be region B locked. As most of their releases are region B locked.

It's for Region B only. I'm in the U.S. and I don't have a region-free Blu-ray player -- so I can't jump on this release.

Any updates on a Region A version? I still can't believe Criterion hasn't released one.

Exactly. Criterion needs to release this. Even if in an Essentials box set with Chimes and the Stranger or his Shakespeare adaptations.

There is a region A/1 Japanese Studio Canal release that I picked up from Amazon.

The booklet and packaging is all in Japanese, and the opening crawl and credits are all in French, but the disc is indeed region 1, and from what little of it I saw while testing the disc, the transfer looks good.

It's got English audio and removable Japanese subtitles. Probably the best option for now if you're in North America.

It's about $10 more now than it was when I bought it last week, but here it is:

I also have that release, it's a great blu ray. One of my favorite slip cases ever, very cool.

Chimes at Midnight and The Immortal Story from Criterion August 30, 2016, and there's the Kino Blu-ray of The Stranger... but alas, no sign of The Trial except on Amazon Streaming (hate it), previous U.S. DVD OP. I don't even see the crap public domain companies releasing this in physical format in the U.S. Very strange. Come on, Criterion, and while you're at it, since we're talking not only of Welles but of a novel by Kafka, how about releasing Soderbergh's Kafka as well, which is only available currently (for U.S. players) by way of Korea. While I'm begging, even though this is completely unrelated except in that it is both well done and very strange, how about a Region 1, NTSC version of The Saragossa Manuscript. Yes, I know Criterion isn't following me, us, on this thread.
