Check the stuff out over at davis dvd. The six disc SE set will be coming this spring to celebrate the Pink Panther's 40 years!!
The following movies will be included in REMASTERED anamorphic widescreen:
The Pink Panther A shot in the dark The Pink Panther Strikes Again Revenge of the Pink Panther Trail of the Pink Panther
Plus, disc 6 will have tons of bonus stuff on it including: The Pink Panther Story Trivia stuff audio commentary from Blake Edwards!! Oscar winning pink panther cartoons and more!
Apart from some changes in the packing, it appears to be identical to the region 2 version. If this is so, you are in for a treat, because that is an excellent box set. But like the R2 version, four of the movies are missing. Allthough most of these were not very good, I still wish they were included in this DVD box...
"To fight with the feeble-minded is to fight at their level"
But as the Dark horizons article you referred to in the "Birth of the Pink Panther" board stated, a box set containing all nine movies is due spring 2005. That is a fairly rotten way to make more money, but I sincerly hope it is true, along with the rest of the article. I really look forward too it, along with the tenth movie.
Until then, I still recommend the DVD box wich is coming on region 1 in april. Apart from the fact that "The return" is missing, it is in my opinion one of the best box releases around. They either tend to have to little bonus features, like the Star trek: complete movie collection, or too overwhelmingly much, like Alien quadrilogy. The extra's in this Pink Panther set are perfect, they give you all the neseccary and amusing info, without becoming boring.
It is a shame though that the region 1 version probably won't contain all the extras as it's region 2 counterpart. Sometimes the region 2 versions off all sorts of releases are inferior to the region 1 version (allthough this is dependant on what R2 version you have, there are several available trouhgout Europe), but it is still unfair there should be any significant differences at all.
"To fight with the feeble-minded is to fight at their level"
yeah, they always have to make things complicated with R1 and R2 (and I guess the other regions as well). Apparently MGM is soon going to start doing what they do with the Bond flicks: releasing better verisons each year on super-bonus-cool-collector's-edition DVD. They should have put all the panther flicks together. This collection is out because its the panther's 40th birthday. This year is when they should have released the flick.
as for the other movies, there's a good chance that MGM does not have the rights to make or sell them. I know that this is a fact with "Return" because I have seen it on sell very often, Artisan I guess has the rights to it.
I think the 9 movie box wich is supposedly due next year is probably the last upgrade-from-previous-version is the last we are likely to see for a while. They can do it with Bond, but the Pink Panther fanbase is to small...or so I think.
You are right about Artisan having the rights for "the return". I bought it on the web way back in September, after I saw it wasn't included in my then newly phurcased DVD collection. The Artisan relase of "The Return", may have been good when it was new, but today it is crap, grainy non-anamorpic widescreen transfer with few extras and no subtitles. It is overdue for a re-release. I hope they manage to cocordinate all rights so we do get all movies in one box next year.
"To fight with the feeble-minded is to fight at their level"
As far as I know, the original movie is only released in a single disc version on region 1. The release is several years old, and probably not very good by today's standards. I don't know if it will be released outside of a box set in the future.
"To fight with the feeble-minded is to fight at their level"
yeah, norse is right. most of the films were released on R1 a couple of years ago. they were also put together in box set. of course, they are not very good to today's standards, like norse said.
This is bada$$. The packaging is pretty slick looking, and the films are work of comedic genius (particularly A Shot in the Dark and Strikes Again). While Return isn't in it, it is the weakest of the Sellers' Pink Panthers, and while I'll still buy it for completist reasons, it's the one I'd pick to be left out
As for next year's potential 9-film box set, I'd rather have this one. I'm not a big fan of the non-Sellers Pink Panther flicks.

I'm gonna have to wait for the next Fun Cash redemption on Columbia House, sadly. I'm trying to restrain myself from picking it up now, because it'll be a much better deal over there (I have over 50 bucks fun cash, so I essentially will be getting it for free). Damnit, I hope it comes soon.

I just bought the box set and was really pissed when I realised "The Return..." wasn't on it. Why? But like someone said it's not the best Pink Panther movie and I do have it on video so it's not so bad, but when you buy a box set you imagine it will have all of the movie. When you talk of the 9 DVD box set...What are the 9 movies? There's the 5 with Peter Sellers well 6 if you count "Trail of the..", than there's the curse and the son (which I don't think should be considered part of the collection)....But that is only 8 movies. Which one am I missing?
Didn't know this until just now myself, but here you go:
THE BOXED SET Pink Panther Shot in the Dark Revenge of the Pink Panther Trail of the Pink Panther Pink Panther Strikes Again
SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE BOX SET Return of the Pink Panther
NO PETER SELLERS, NO BOX SET Son of the Pink Panther Inspector Closeau Curse of the Pink Panther
Wow, you guys are really picky about DVD quality. Heck, I'll still watch a good VHS movie and enjoy it. Here is a question: Would like to have fewer features and a bigger collection, with a cheaper cost, or would you prefer the super-deluxe-ultra-premium package and pay out the wazoo for it? Myself, I'm not that big a commentary fan, but do love the chapter selection (and normally better picture quality) of DVDs, so I'm usually content with a 'bare bones' version myself. I have a feeling most here and on movie message boards in general will disagree. Why take a Delorean when you can have a Lambrogini, eh? Well, for me the answer is simple economics. So what's this rumor about a new Pink Panther movie? Anything other than word of mouth rumour? I've thought of a couple of options, if we wanted to avoid treading the hallowed ground of Peter Sellers comedy. Perhaps another inept inspector, certainly the world has produced its fair share (and I'm not talking a 'son of', either.). The main thing would be the spirit of the comedy, and of course, the presence of the pink panther diamond. Now I know I'm going to get lynched here, but I'm putting it on the table for discussion anyway, so just consider it a suggestion for suggestions sake. How about the investigation of the theft of the pink panther diamond by...Austin Powers(typist cringes and waits for message boarders to hurl items at him from globabl distances)?
Never really enjoyed the Austin Powers series that much, but Mike Myers is such an on-again off-again type comedian he might pull it off. He does seem to enjoy the slapstick and the self-humiliating type of humor. Plus--Robert Wagner, who played George Lytton in the PP movies, played Number two in the AP movies. Chances for delicious irony there.
No, the new movie not a prequel, even if the imdb main page for "The Pink Panther"(2005) says so. In all likelyhood it is a remake. You'll find much more info on the boards for that movie.
There have been several scripts in the works for the next Pink Panther movie. The info on imdb was accurate at one point, but the script has since been rewritten several times. Now it supposedly is a current take on the characther, not a prequel. Movie synopsis for upcoming movies should be taken with a grain of salt, they are often written before the script is approved.
