Did the movie come before the cartoons? I thought it was the other way around. For some reason I believed the cartoons were made in the 50s. Somebody please inform me!

the other way to tell is because this movie was released in 1963, and the first of the cartoon shorts (The Pink Phink) was released in 1964...
