doesn't work
The ending doesn't work. The inspector would still go to jail for stealing the jewels they were in his coat pocket. How is he going to explain that? He may not be the phantom but he does have the jewels in his pocket.

shareyou're forgetting the first rule of continuity in the Pink Panther series, though: never over-analyze...

He doesn't know they are tgere. That's why David Niven says that Clouseau won't rot in prison ("It takes years to rot"). But even better is that Clouseau chooses to own the moment and enjoy being known as the Phantom.
shareClouseau will get out of prison for the same reason that Dreyfuss comes back to life after he is totally disintergrated in THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN. Because he is needed for the next movie.
shareEasy. If you'll remember, Simone goes to speak with Dala near the end of the movie. Dala probably gave the jewel to Simone, who planted it in her husband's coat pocket.
shareI didn't like it because I think all of them for reasons obvious and some not obvious cosnpired to frame the poor Detective. As far as his wife goes, that's pretty cruel on her part, after all the man is her husband. With a wife like that who needs enemies?
As for The Phantom well his intentions are obvious, he wanted to get away, as for the princess what reason would she have for making the Inspector take the fall? It seems she wasn't a nice person either to have been part of it which I certainly think she was. Oh well, at least the good ol' Inspector got out for the next movie.
Originally the Phantom was supposed to be the main character and the whole franchise was going to revolve around him. However, the Inspecter was a much more interesting character and that's why he returned to be the lead in the following films.
I like the movie but hate the ending. I agree with antmarron. Everyone except the Inspector was rich and sleazy. It makes me angry that they came out on top.
Antmarron needs to chill out and realize that it is a film! I'd bet that you are a soap opera fan by the way you were so critical of a fictional character, am I right? :D
By the way, the Princess's reason for helping to frame Clouseau was that she also loved Sir Charles Litton "The Notorius Phantom", or as Clouseau once said "Sir Charles Phantom "The Notorius Litton"!
Just thought that I would broaden your horizon a little,
