I don't know why, but this line is my favorite in the WHOLE movie.
The thieves knock out the lights in order to pull off the theft and Clouseau lights what he thinks is a candle...but its a firecracker.
It goes off in his hand (luckily he was wearing an armored gauntlet) and he scatters the party guests.
He looks up and says;
"What kind of a candle is thees?"
ROTFLMAO!!!
I remember watching this film when I was young and laughing so hard at that bit!

It wasn't a firecracker. It was a Roman candle. Hence the question asked by Clouseau.

What matters is, its a hilarious line!
Not so much a detail, more a dry, extra layer on top of what was already a funny gag. The unspoken (Roman) bit makes it all the more memorable for me.
