The end of the movie everyone think Clouseau is The Phantom and they also think he stolen The Pink Panther Diamond. As for Sir Charles George are free to go but for poor Clouseau he was arrest the two police men in car tell Clouseau how he do it and he tell them "Well...It wasn't easy."

I totally agree, while I was watching the movie... I was hoping for something good to happen... but bloody the panther came up showing "THE END" animatic.

Crazy!!! Isn't it? I heard so many good things about this movie...but the ending really disappointed me.

right now I only stick in the first movie to watch "It had better be tonight".
the rest of the peter sellers ones with dreyfus and cato are so much better.

reply

Yeah, the ending sucks, for at the time the movie was made. But, don't forget, there were sequals after this, and they were all good. So, technically, it wasn't the end.

He can't get the attention of a woman- even his wife- remember "Finally!" and then the champagne bottle goes off, hitting his chin and the headboard with foam.. I had forgotten that scene when I watched it recently, it about made me bray..

Anyway, when they drag him out of the courthouse all the women are mobbing him, it's a new experience for him- that's why he's willing to accept the label of The Phantom, he now realizes that this is his ticket to being popular, especially with women.

Well, that's how I took it anyway..

The reason for this ending is The Phantom is the main character. Sellers kept giving ideas to make his character funnier and as a result he had a lot more screen time and became the most popular character in the movie.

all the endings in the panther series have been lame, like the movie dropped off a cliff; otherwise the movies were great.

the ending was genius. blake edwards didnt give you more on purpose because he didnt like any of you. he said he would just end it there. my copy has an additional minute and fourteen seconds of footage with the real ending. but only i have that.

HAHAHA! I can't beleiev you fell for the oldest trick in the book AGAIN! (well, I guess this is more like the second oldest trick in the book. sorry for acting weird. sometime logging on to these message boards at 3 am isnt the best idea. anyway, i was kidding about the whole thang. thatks for playing along with my stupid sense of humor though.

by the way, i dont think there is anything wrong with the ending. it is pitch perfect. you want to talk about a bad ending, read the end of this post.

oh wait, you just did. (talk about anti-climactic)

What really made me angry is that there is no explanation in "a Shot In the dark" as to how he gets out and is reinstated.

reply

There is no explanation in "A Shot in the Dark" as to how he gets out and is reinstated, because "A Shot in the Dark" was filmed before the film everyone knows as the original, but was subsequently shelved as the studio didn't think it would make much money. Following the success of "The Pink Panther", "A Shot in the Dark" was released as they knew there was demand for Inspector Clouseau.

So there you go

PS Peter Sellers is a comic genius - just goes to show the American Pie generation how real comedy can be created without a load of fart jokes

reply

In The Return of the Pink Panther, do they mention Clousseau being in prison and getting out?

reply

No there is no mention in any film.

I think the ending was brilliant - Peter Sellers says he is the Phantom to be desired by all the women and David Niven says anyway - "they will let him out as soon as the Phantom strikes again" - so you know he's not going to be in jail for a long time.

The poor fellow might even get some action for a change.
