Content

My 12 year old son really wants to see this but I am not sure about the content. For example, nudity is not a big deal unless it is sexual. He has seen Breathless and enjoyed it so would this be an okay film for him. When I look at IMDb's reccomendations I see that 8 1/2 is one of them. He has seen that and loved it. Is it comparable to Contempt?

Last Film seen:
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (3rd time)- 10/10

There is nothing in the content to suggest inappropriate viewing for a twelve year old. It's fine. The only nudity is Bardot's bum a couple of times. In fact I would encourage him to see that!

On another note, your twelve year old son loved 8 1/2? I wish I'd started watching these films that early on in life.

Do you think he would like it? He thought Breathless was good and will be watching Band of Outsiders soon. He hasn't seen too many Godard films.

Last Films seen:
Knife in the Water (1962) 9/10
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) 10/10

Le Mepris is a slightly different film from those two. The two films you mentioned are quite juvenile in the fact they're mere homages to American films, albeit with a fresh, French perspective. Le Mepris doesn't have the snappy dialogue and 'cool' sensibility Breathless and Band of Outsiders had, but it's probably all the better for it. If you're after something like Breathless and Band... try a few of Truffaut's early films like Jules and Jim, Shoot the Piano Player and The 400 Blows. They share the rhythm and love of Hollywood that you see in Godard's New Wave films.

Let's just say Le Mepris less 'easy' to watch (more melodrama, slower narrative), although much more accessible than Godard's mid-60's films and beyond, which were much more political and much more avant-garde. It's a good film. He should watch it.

It's funny you should mention this. I watched it for the first time last night and was suprised by a couple of instances of adult content that went way outside the PG rating the film has in Australia. One involves shots of ancient Greek artefacts depicting intercourse in a reasonably detailed manner. The other involves a string of expletives uttered by Bardot when she's trying to irritate her husband. Depending on the translation you get, her language is pretty salty...

It's probably nothing your son couldn't handle (sounds pretty mature!), but I thought it might be worth mentioning seeing you were concerned.
