Godard's best

This is certainly his most cinematic, and perhaps even his most mainstream, but it is still his best in my opinion. I had no idea Fritz Lang and Jack Palance were in it until I watched it. Talk about your inspired pairing.

Most people prefer his New Wave films, because he was still willing to at least occasionally entertain his audience. Of those, here's my favorites:

Pierrot le Fou
Weekend
Masculin-Feminin
Breathless
A Woman Is a Woman
Les Carabiniers

Many people also like Alphaville and Band of Outsiders. I haven't seen 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her. He made several excellent films after 1968, but they are not entertaining in the Hollywood sense, and are not for casual viewers.

Hard to say, as Godard doesn't really have an acknowledged masterpiece, and many people find the social and political commentary in some of his films too much to swallow. Of his New Wave films, my favorites were Pierrot le Fou and Weekend. Along with Contempt, of course.

Hi, it's the apparent Fiona Apple fool here. Um, you might like Godard's "Une Femme est Une Femme" aka A Woman is a Woman. It's a wonderful, smart and sassy exploration of relationships and femininity. It's much lighter than the great "Le Mepris" - it might remind you of a french, Hollywood musical(so to speak). It is available on DVD, I think.

Alphaville is my personal favorite...

Contempt is my favorite.

Alphaville is great, too.

I love Band of Outsiders, Pierrot Le Fou, A Woman is a Woman.

Weekend sounds great on paper, but kinda boring while actually sitting there watching it IMHO.
