based on the alberto moravia novel "contempt"

robert frangie frangie states that the film is based on moravia's "ghost" book... this may be true, but it is, for the most part based on his book "contempt"

"Ghost at Noon" and the western translated "Contempt" are the same thing. Godard's movie is what spawned the "new title".

..."new title" which is also the literal translation of the original Italian title "Il disprezzo" (= "Le mepris" = "(The) Contempt").

The English "Ghost at Noon" title refers to an episode, about at the end of the novel, that didn't make its way in the film (the husband believes he is seeing his wife in tender love again with him).

Disprezzo !

But Godard says about the book : "it's the kind of pulp which can make a good movie". It's not a very good book and one of the worst of Alberto Moravia. The film is better.

Moravia brings the good. Always.
