I don't know if anyone knows this but the part of GW falling down the stairs was not done by a stuntman but the Duke himself as told by his son, Michael, when they did the movie in a special showing and he talked about his dad and this movie.
shareJohn Wayne and Maureen O'Hara did mostly all of their own stunts. Maureen said in a commentary that if you see actor face then their doing the stunt (among those line.) I always admire people who did their own stunts.

Even as late as BIG JAKE, Duke seemed to like doing a stunt now and then, such as being punched during a barroom brawl and falling backward over a poker table.
