For a 90's kid who really wants to see this film, what would be the recommended option? The criterion collection DVD? The itunes version? Is criterion missing anything critical? Thanks in advance!

The criterion set has both the theatrical version and the longer roadshow cut so you can't go wrong there. Enjoy.

I would urge seeing the shorter 163-minute release version first. The extended cut has a lot of inserts of poor video and audio quality, sometimes missing video completely, that would be way too distracting. The shorter version is tighter, more concise and fine-tuned. Very little that's missing from it has any real importance.
