The Big W
The revelation of "The Big W" is so funny (and clever)! I'ts the best sight gag I've ever seen. I laugh every time even though I know it's coming.

shareWhat I thought was cool was the fact that practically every cast member runs past it in the film, while we the audience clearly see it in the background. You even see it as soon as they arrive in the park. When Rooney & Hackett chase after Adams & Caesar, and they all stop to "talk this over," the Big W is already visible waaaaaay in the background, screen left. When they ask about Spencer Tracy ("who's he?"), it's in the background again, and of course, the great close-up shots with the angelic choir. Wish it was still around in Rancho Palos Verdes.
shareI worked on a film shoot in the 80's on that same property. Remnants of the old palm trees were still there then. I believe that they are now gone.
shareI believe you're right, seems that I've heard the last tree was gone a few years ago.
shareLast year or 2 years ago, James Rolfe, The Angry Video Game Nerd, was in California and did a video about the locations of the movie. He showed what's left of the big W. All that's left is a tiny little stump about a foot tall or so.
Think about this. Once bread becomes toast, you can't make it back into bread.
off topic,. re: your sig:
Ask someone to say "toast" ten times quickly...
When they're done, ask them "okay what do you put in a toaster?"
9 of 10 people WILL say "toast!"
"No, silly, BREAD!"
I know you are but what am I?
The Big W is located at 33.741016°, -118.374993° You can enter those coordinates at most map websites, e.g. Google Maps https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=nl (It's the green arrow.)
The street address is 5500 Palos Verdes Dr S, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
Man everytime I click on your link it takes me to my house in Florida, Man! I'm like 'Come on! I know where I live. I wanne see the Big W, man!"
shareI never noticed the big W while the cast members were walking past it. The big W was revealed to me when Emaline saw it from the water fountain
shareI just finished watching this on DVD. When Dorothy Provine's character discovers the "big W", the background music actually has disguised lyrics. When the camera turns to the palms, the music subtly sings, "the big double you." I have watched this at least a dozen times and this was the first time I ever caught it.
shareYou know I'll be listening for that next time I see it.
May I have 10 thousand marbles, please?

The reason no one saw the big "W" is that they were looking for something that began with a w such a windmill or waterfall ECT. They didn't know that Grogen(Jimmie Durante)meant that literarily.
You may think that but I couldn't possibly comment--Francis Urquhart

They contained three of the funniest shots in the sequence:

According to Wikipedia, the crossed palm trees in front of IN-N-OUT burger places are there because the owners of the chain liked the movie and wanted to commemorate the "W" clue.
Personally, I think most people would think it was thought up by a lunatic; they didn't see the movie. I did see it, but I feel that way, anyhow.
The funny thing is there is actually a chain of retail stores in Australia called 'Big W'. But when I watched this movie several years ago, I didn't realize at the time that Big W was only in Australia. So I was expecting to see dozens of people joking about there being a Big W store and of course there were none. Still any other Australian's who have watched this movie in recent years would get a laugh about the 'Big W'.
shareThere were big W stores in the UK too.
