I thought this was the greatest thing when I was a kid, but when I saw it recently I just stared at it in disbelief. How did I ever think this was funny? A small army of certifiable morons say stupid things, do stupid things and act as if they are criminally insane. A singularly witless (in every sense) exercise that tries to bludgeon its audience into laughing at things that aren't funny.
It seems that now, people don't appreciate comedy that doesn't have vulgarisms every other word, gratuitous sex and filth from top to bottom. I am not sure why you didn't like this movie, but it is just as funny tonight when I saw it for the umpteenth time as when I first saw it 35 years ago on TV.
You opinion is yours and mine is mine. I love America!!
it may not be as funny as when i was younger, but it's always gonna be entertaining, just based on the all-star cast that is in it and just those few seconds of panning by the Stooges, always makes me smile :)
To be fair, there is very little comedy from the past that I find really funny now. There isn't much out there that dates well. I thought the Marx Bros. dated well but now I'm not so sure, though that may just be from over-exposure.
I think the movie sort of fails the test of time. The movie is almost all slapstick with very few jokes. A lot of the movie drags, especially the scenes with Tracy. Things like destroying a gas station or trying to drive across a river just aren't that funny anymore.
Having said that, I do love the movie and watch it whenever it comes on TCM, even though I have a VHS and CD of the movie. I guess because I saw it as a kid in 1963 or so and loved all the people I knew from TV and other movies (Caesar, Berle, Rooney, Hackett, Durante, etc etc).
I could have told you that! Jonathan Winters destroying a gas station. Phil Silvers stealing a car from Don Knotts. The entire closing scene. This is one movie to make me wonder whether I would be better off deaf and blind. >:(
If you take the basic premise of getting as many stars from the light (and heavy) entertainment world, putting them together, and weaving a vaguely interesting AND FUNNY,story around it, I give IMMMMW 10/10. I thought it was brilliant in just about every regard.
I am old enough to know (or know of) everyone who stars in this magnificent movie. Those who aren't could perhaps google the "names' who appeared in this wonderful timeless (in my view) classic.
Time and time again the "names" just keep on turning up. Jack Benny for example. It is BRILLIANT!
It is not MEANT to be witty or Shaekspeare-esque. It is meant to be corny, with a bit of slapstick.
I absolutely love it! Being from Australia, I am not familiar with Dick Shawn, but every other person I am aware of, and thought they were great in this montage of cameos.
Every time a new personality came on and played their role that fitted in with their established public persona I found my self filled with joy.
A wonderful, FUNNY movie, Ethel Merman is a favourite, and unlike some here, I found Johathon Winters, having been pushed way over the edge, trashing the gas station hilarious.
Terry Thomas, the greatest European cad ever, Phil Silvers the greatest US cad.
I could just watch Milton Berles do his "faces" and laugh.
What makes it work for me on my umpteenth time watching it is the fact that it ridicules greed. That makes it timely even if it isn't as hysterical as when I first saw it decades ago.
