What Does Buddy Hackett Say?

Early on, trying to guess what the big W might be. Mickey Rooney says 'no' after each guess.

"Watch, . (no) . . Watchtower! (no) . . Wall, . .(no) . . walnut tree, . . (no) . in bags?"

Does he say 'in bags?' What does he mean?

Walnuts in bags? So is the money in the walnuts in the bags?

reply

He said Walnut tree....(no) Walnuts....(no) in bags....meaning loose walnuts not on a tree.

If Mama Cass had handed that ham sandwich to Karen Carpenter two lives might have been saved

reply

I always thought he said Walnuts... "In Bed"!! Didn't make much sense but that's what I've always thought.

(By the way, Chargers Fan, Mama Cass died of a heart attack. The ham sandwich is an urban legend)

I believe you're right about Benjy saying, " . . . in bed!" I always took that to be an off the cuff play on the old complaint about a romantic partner eating crackers -- or, in some cases, peanuts -- in bed and making a very uncomfortable mess with the crumbs or shells. Steve V.

reply

No, it's bags. Benjy should take the marbles out of his mouth.

I rewatched this classic on TCM today with the Closed Captioning on, and you're right, he says "In bags!" Don't know why. Don't care why. This is one of my Top Tenners of ALLLL TIME. Steve V.
