Is the Criterion release worth getting?

I was thinking of getting this movie on Criterion blu-ray, but I heard that the standard blu-ray release has a better picture quality, and I don't need an over-three hour cut of the movie (my personal rule: unless it's LOTR, less is more. Ha!)

So does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you so much!

Well, personally I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the newest Criterion release. It just depends on what your “thing” is I guess. The Criterion version I have I bought not long after it was released.

It actually includes 2 versions of the film (the shorter being 163 minutes.) The extras are okay, although “And Now For Something A Little Less Serious” isn’t among them, unfortunately. The set I have is the one with 5 discs of content – meaning only that if you need to watch the films in dvd you can without missing any of the extras.

I too have the Criterion version. It is pretty good because it includes the movie with lost scenes added in. It includes the intermission radio calls; when I was a kid and saw the movie, the radio calls were included in the movie. It also contains a couple of TV shows where some of the principals were interviewed about the movie.

But frankly I really liked the Turner version of the movie that included the lost scenes. Unfortunately they don't show it on TCM anymore, for some reason. I don't know why unless there is some copyright infringement.

Does the Criterion release include the longer version on DVD? I'd love to have that, but I don't have a Blu-Ray player.

I already have the standard cut version on DVD.

The Criterion version contains five discs, with all of the same content available on both formats (2xBlu-ray and 3xDVD). This includes both the 163 minute version and the 197 minute version.

The criterion version has deleted scenes added in, but the quality of those scenes is significantly different. And they throw in some behind the scenes pictures, oddly enough.

I like the Criterion release. In fact, I think I'll rewatch it this weekend.
