I just watched Irma La Douce again on cable tonight. I was struck by the fact that it was still so fresh and funny after more than 40 years. Must be Billy Wilder's flawless direction and the outstanding talents of Jack Lemmon, Shirley Maclaine and Lou Jacobi. And the music... the "Language of Love" is such a pretty song!
This movie came out 9 years before I was even born. How I was introduced to it was by chance. I was sitting at my dad's house when I was a young teen, around 13 or 14 flipping through late night tv when I came across a movie about geisha's and Japan. With being interested in feudal Japan from a very young age, I started watching. That movie ended up being My Geisha with Shirley MacLaine. As I watched, I kept getting more and more involved in it. Upset when it ended and now about 3 am, I still had the TV on when another movie started.
Now, by this point being such a young age I had never even heard of Shirley MacLaine. That night it happened to be a Shirley MacLaine Marathon. As I started watching the next movie entitled Irma LaDouce I was absolutely captivated. Growing up in the Star Wars generation it was the farthest thing from anything I liked to watch. I never forgot about that movie, with doing internet searches on it every once and a while, I purchased it the day it came out on DVD. I have since introduced it to my wife and a lot of my friends. I can honestly say that you wouldn't expect anybody in my age group, especially my friends should or would even be interested in it, surprisingly enough, they all were. Bottom line, it's my favourite movie and I could watch it again and again. I can say if anybody likes a good comedy, you have to rent this movie. It blows some of the other crap they put out these days out of the water! Give it a chance, you'll love it!!!
Oh Samurai, I appreciated your story& your post so much, I think it's touching and cute. I myself watched the movie only 1 month ago and I have to say I totally loved it. I'm huge fan of Billy and Jack, I think they're the best in making intelligent comedy, a mixture of cynicism, talent and goodness. I'm glad all your friends&family liked this movie as well, that's one of the best things about film: to share opinions and tastes! ;)
__ Joe Gillis: That's the trouble with you readers. You know all the plots.

well????? "you watched this film in ur DAD'S house...here is a IMDB BOARD NOT A FAMILLY CHAT. DONT TELL US YOUR SH#T MEMORY.
Go ahead, hate it. Your epitaph will be like this: "He didn't like a Billy Wilder movie", and your family will even try not to remember you in any way. I'm sure of that u_u But it's okay, you used the past tense, I guess you love it now, for your own sake ¬¬
