The ending freaked me out!

How did the ending even make sense? That's a stupid question, because it didn't! How could...oh, never mind. Do you know what I mean?

I'll make him an offer with the force while possessed by a demon, and being eaten by a shark.

Well, I think that was the point. It was a nonsensical, screwball ending to a nonsensical, screwball comedy. That why it was so freakin' awesome!! :-)

I agree. It was a hilarious ending to a nearly perfect film. And the fact that Lord X's reappearance had a touch of weirdness made it even more appealing, sort of a nod to Hitchcock. Once again, Billy Wilder ends his films perfectly, this time with Moustache breaking the third wall.

I've never really understood the ending either! Each time I watch the film, I'm always like: "So...is Nestor the father or what?!" The ending makes me laugh anyway (and I can see why some people think it's freaky!) but it confuses me. Ultimately, I do think it was a joke and Nestor was the father of Irma's baby, seeing as he was clearly dressing up as the Lord. Maybe the joke is that there is actually a Lord who looks like Nestor in disguise? I don't know!

yah, it pretty much scared the crap out of me that first time.

I've noticed very few people are scary when theyve been poked in the eye.

Wilder liked screwball endings -- "I'm a man.........well nobody's perfect" in Some lIke it Hot. I liked the movie but found it uneven - a young Lemmon is truly stretched here and Irma is so street wise and yet too dim in parts. Still enjoyable, but have never watched it again as I have all of Lemmon's movies.

The ending was pretty stupid, but I suppose taken in context with the era we're just supposed to think of it as screwball silly, and not think too much into it. Different times.

That was the one problem with this movie. There was no establisted consistent tone. A bit of drama, a bit of comedy, and a ridiculous turn in the plot. It was trying to find itself. It didn't start off as a screwball comedy but it kinda found its way there at the end. But maybe that had a lot to do with adapting the source material from a French musical. It isn't anything like The Apartment. It was weird but it was funny and what more can you ask for? :)

The ending made me laugh as I was like "WTF?!" And even though that ending came out of nowhere, I liked it b/c it surprised me.

As Mustache said, "That's another story."Just a joke.

What uneased me a little was when Lord X was going down in the elevator from the street to the basement of the bar. There was something about it that creeped me out, I think it was the characters face and eyes and the whole slightly sinister feeling about it.

It was screwball comedy, but I believe Wilder succeeded in giving it a decidedly quaint flavor. I interpreted it as sort of a Parisian viewpoint which of course would be quite different from our general viewpoint.

Wilder loved unexpected endings -- as in some like it hot --"nobody's perfect" remember?

As I said in another post, there was a real Lord X who must have had sex with Irma hence the baby (remember she says she knew when she conceived). Lemmon's Lord X never had sex with Irma -- and so the final words "that's another story!".

reply

Lemmons Lord X did have sex with her, the night when Lemmons lord X stays the night, his then getting dressed in her bathroom.

The ending was a joke, from moustache he had been a lawyer and delivered babies all sorts of jobs hence his line that's another story, which he says a few times to Nestor. When he helped Lemmon dress up as lord X he probably based his look on an actual lookalike.
