A Great film...but....(spoile rs)

I really loved this film. The cafe bartender (Moustache) had the best part and lines, and Jack Lemmon as the british dude was so on point, and man, he's a truly wonderful actor (one for the ages).

But, having said this, the scene when he bends the bars to escape prison, seems sooo out of place, didnt necessarily ruin the film, but I didn't like it.

Overall, a nice different film, very colorful, full of life as they say, but Papillion (McQueen and Hoffman) was better.

and to be honest, it was 25-30 min too long.

"...but that's another story"...(Moustache)

Papillon???? Me too, I also like Roman Holiday better. Which means: why the heck do you come up with that one? Or is it just the other film you ever watched?

reply

Irma La Douce or Papillon...nah, I prefer Femme Fatale to both of them.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

I did think the 'bending of the bars' in the prison cell was a bit out of place - and bizarre! I guess it seems more suited to a cartoon than a Hollywood movie. I adore Irma La Douce but each time I see that part, I have to laugh as it seems so out of place!

Jack Lemmon: America's Sweetheart
"It's Magic Time"

Is that quote yours Mizz Cane or Jack Lemmon's ? Just curious. Thanks.

I kind of liked the escape sequence, including the bit with the car outside the prison. I saw a little of Laurel and Hardy in it.
About "bending the bars", well this isn't Papillon! I think what Billy Wilder wanted to say was: "He escaped from prison, it's not important how, don't over-analyze it. Let's get on with the story."

Rome. By all means, Rome.

I agree it was a bit long -- the pacing was sluggish at some points. But, overall, I was satisfied and enjoyed it. Moustache saying: "But that's another story..." at the end was great.

"Your hair was darker then."
"My heart was lighter then."

Sorry?

I assume you mean what I had as my sig back then. Jack Lemmon often referred to himself as America's Sweetheart, according to Doris Day! And of course, he always said 'It's Magic Time' before each take of a movie.

But as you can see, my sig has been changed for a while now.

Back on topic - I don't think the film was overlong at all. It helped tie up the story. If they made it shorter, the story of how Nestor got out of trouble wouldn't have made sense. Just my opinion, of course! Because I love this film.

MSK, wake up! You're replying to the wrong post.

I thought 'mlumiere' was asking me something about a quote? I'm confused, much?!

Yes, s/he was, but (at least on my PC ) the reply appears after horridge's post.

reply

Oh right! Yes, I see. Because s/he put 'Mizz Cane', I thought they meant me. Oh well! They've probably forgotten about it now.

So isn't it permissable to attatch one's reply to the bottom post so that the thread's posts appear in consecutive time order?

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies
