Irma's unbelievable reaction

Ok, maybe I misunderstood, but there's something that kind of ruined the movie for me.

Sequence of events:

1) Irma thinks that Nestor is with other girls every night, they quarrel, break up and she makes him leave home.

2) She's very fond of Lord X. She sleeps with him, doesn't charge him and they're supposed to go to England together.

3) She gets to know that Lord X has been killed, she cries her heart out, she also gets to know that Nestor is the murderer.

4) Moustache says that Nestor killed him because of jealousy.

Result:
5) Irma immediately forgives Nestor, kisses him and loves him so much. "Hey, you treated me badly, you just killed this gentleman that I'm really fond of, but it must be an act of love so, ok, I love you again". So very out of character and illogical.

If I missed something, please explain it to me.

It's one of the reasons it's a movie. It is unbelievable. And, there is a certain kind of woman who is forgiving of everything. That's part of what the film is about, the fault of that kind of person, how they wind up, and their ultimate fate.

But also recall, that Lord-X did "come back from the dead", so to speak. And, there was actually a "real" Lord-X at the end of the film in the church audience.

But that's another story...

I think you answered your own question. It's an act of love according to Irma's thinking and love conquers all.

And she did not sleep with Lord X

reply

She did sleep with him! Remember she insists that she can "cure" him, and he tries to resist, but nothing's really wrong with him, so, of course, they do end up doing it.

Really? And what movie were you watching?

But you have no problem with a woman being a prostitute and giving all her money to support her boyfriend? How does that make sense?

Actually everything you said is completely within character. Irma and women like her are very flattered when someone kills or does any extreme act out of jealousy. To them it means that person loves them so much, look what they’re willing to do.

Most normal people would see such an act as a major red flag and more than enough reason to run like hell away from such a person. However, people who don't value or think much of themselves seem to need and actually relish that sort of behavior. These major acts of ‘love’, as they would see it, prove they matter and are worthy of love. Fittingly, the kind of person who would do something like that usually ends up with the kind of person who would appreciates such behavior; both being very disturbed.

Personally, I am turned off by jealousy and would never continue to be in a relationship with someone who exhibits signs of it. I think it’s highly destructive and, in my opinion, it shows the jealous person knows he doesn’t have much to offer. Why else would he feel threatened that someone else could easily replace him?
