Who is the father of the baby?
Who is the father of the baby? the real Lord X or the fake Lord X (Lemmon)?

shareIs there a REAL Lord X? Don't think so. ;-) Nestor is Lord X, and the father of the baby.

I think what they're referring to is at that at the very, very end of Irma La Douce, you see Nestor with Irma and the child. But Moustache sees the Lord sitting in the church and the Lord walks past him saying 'Cheeribye' or something like that. So it's like Nestor and the Lord were not the same person! It's always confused me. I always thought it was just a joke!
I think this was a great way to end the movie. Seeing the other Lord X walk out and seeing the look on Moustache's face... classic. "That's a whole 'nother story" :?)
sharetrue, this made a great ending, the whole "there is a lord X" thing, with moustache saying his running line.
right next to "nobody is perfect" in SLIH
listen to what he says about her not liking the real him, that kinna tells you that it really was him.
the guy at the end is just there for the kicks. destroy the unbelievable happy goody feeling they were going for if it was someone elses baby dont you think
The is SERIOUSLY over-thinking the movie. The ending is there for laughs, not as a real plot twist. ;-)
shareI was surprised when Irma said "Lord X" was the father, because I though all they did was play cards, which in my limited understanding of reproduction does not produce offspring.

Well actually ----- the ending does make sense. Since she never had sex with Lemmon's lord x, then the baby is the real lord x's since he must have had sex with her. hence the "other story" referred to at the very end.
shareDon't you remember the scene where she was telling him about Tahiti, then Baghdad, then she practically climbs on top of him and he says "be gentle"? What do you think they did? ;)
shareTalked about the first thing that popped up?
shareAlso Irma's quote "A woman knows these things" in reply to Nestor questioning how she knows he's not the father. All those little tidbits of a secondary plot twist are a Wilder comedy hallmark as a director. Sort of his trademark the way Hitchcock worked in drama twists. .
Wilder had a thing for European inspired film making where plot twists were common to their audiences, especially the French who love word play. Check out that whole riff on the French legal system - would have been a lot easier if Nestor had been convicted of murder instead of 15 years.
They did the horizontal bop the last time they were together.
shareAt the time of conception Lemmon was the only Lord X.
