Re Make

I think somebody should make some type of re-make of this movie...not that the original isn't good....I think it's wonderful....that's why there should be a re-make.

reply

It would be better if they didn't.

If the orginal is good, why bother making a remake?
That's one of the troubles of Hollywood these days.

reply

For what? Imagine that the remake just isn't even funny. It would kill the image and reputation of the original, and the mission of getting people's interests into the original film would fail...because, honestly, that's the only reason that lets remakes be sort of useful.
Cinema is not music, it's much harder to make a nice remake than a good version or a remix of an old song.

reply

And if they do, it should be done as the musical it should have been in the first place.

Agree.

I think if they remade the movie, they wouldn't be able to make it with the same sweet romantic innocence that it was made with in the sixties (because of the moral codes of filming).

If it were remade, it would be turned into a serious movie with nudity, strong dialogue, and Nestor mostly would most likely be a different character entirely (being more of a rough around the edges loveless cop before seeing the error of his ways at the end of the movie).

There also would most likely actually be a "Lord X" character as opposed to Nestor posing as him. It would probably have to be Nestor paying a man to be Lord X and then becoming jealous when Lord X actually starts sleeping with Irma resulting in Nestor having to bump the old sod off.

I just don't think this can be remade at all...

Sweet, romantic? You must be kidding! I know that was probably the attempt, to make this a sweet, romantic love story but I found nothing sweet, innocent or romantic about it. I suspect any remake would be equally as bad.

Forget the moral code of filming; this movie offends my moral code and insults my intelligence all at the same time. Here are a few of the problems.

-Nestor starts off against the kind of behavior Irma and her friends are involved in but, like that, he jumps into the fray and not only takes up with Irma but is also her pimp? Was Moustache's 'no judgment' speech that good? Please!

-Hyppolyte lets Irma go that easily? Oh yeah, sure, Nestor beat him up and scared him off. We're supposed to believe that and that he accepted defeat and just moved on. Even if his bruised ego could withstand someone taking his girl, Irma was also his livelihood; it's hard to believe he'd let someone affect or take his wallet.

-Irma is as stupid as a rock but considering what she does for a living how could she not tell that Lord X and Nestor were one in the same. After so many men, she should be able to detect these things; mask or no mask.

-Moustache may have thought it was a great idea to conceal the truth but at the point things went horribly wrong and Nestor was convicted, why wouldn't Nestor tell everyone and anyone who would listen what actually happened?

-The police suddenly cease to be corrupt and ask a convicted killer to return to the force? Even if they didn't investigate thoroughly before, would they really buy the fact a guy missing over a year comes rising out of the water? Wouldn't they assume it was a trick and an attempt to resolve Nestor's legal problems?

-Was that a Catholic church they were married in? Seriously, stop making a joke of the sacrament of marriage and of the Church. There are a few rules involved in getting married. I'm not sure either of them would be able to meet the qualifications; at least not so quickly.

I can't figure out how anyone enjoyed this movie. It wasn't even funny.

mdonin, must not have seen the same movie. Nestor does not become her pimp, he poses as a single rich Englishman to keep her from having to prostitute herself while taking on jobs to pay the bills.

reply

I'm surprised they haven't, they seem to be remaking everything else. Give it a few years and I'm sure someone will direct a new version.

It's a lot easier to instantly name remakes which have been worse than the original than to name ones better than the original.

I hate the idea of remakes I feel that's all Hollywood has now turned out to be...is an entertainment field of unoriginaility. This movie is perfect just the way it is. No need having talentless stars and sloppy writing to make this film into a present day film. It wouldn't have the same feel, charm and brilliant writing and direction as the original one has. Hollywood needs to stop being lazy and start getting creative again. I want to make it as a proffessional working actress...but 90% of the material day blows. While the other material is either made or shafted.

Considering that Irma la Douce is a musical play and that Billy Wilder couldn't be bothered to even try to stage the musical, a remake of it (actually, it'd be a second adaptation of the original musical play) isn't a bad idea. People need to give this 'remakes are bad' bullcaca a rest, especially in this case; as somebody else said about the upcoming Annie movie with Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx, remakes are only half of what's made as movies in a given year.

reply

And the other half are sequels.
