It's a shame hardly anyone mentions the excellent job Dewilde did in this film. Of course it's easy to overlook given the other stellar performances. Kinda ironic how he was also the kid in "Shane" and the fame of his line "Come back Shane!" In this film he finds that "Shane" "ain't fit to live with." Hud of course being Shanes exact opposite.
I think it's a great performance. Such a pity that he was the only one of the four principals overlooked in the oscar nominations. Had he been nominated it would undoubtedly have been for supporting actor, but really he deserved to be up for best lead actor alongside Newman.
Brandon De Wilde was very good in this film. He was an excellent actor! Too bad he died at such a young age...would be interesting to see how he would have matured and movies he would have starred in. I believe he died in Denver, Colorado and was 30 years old.
I was sad to read that he died so young, after I watched this for the first time just recently. (I had been putting it off because I hate westerns) This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and I know it's because all of the actors were fantastic in their parts, (as well as so much else) but I felt Brandon did such a great job for someone so young. From his first scene, he brought a reality and interest to the film that made me realize that this was a movie I was likely going to enjoy.
